Role Overview:

Tate & Lyle is looking for a Sr. Research Engineer who will serve as a key area leader in the Process Technology group, Innovation Commercial Development. This role is based out of our innovation center in Hoffman Estates, IL. The Process Technology Team is currently composed of a diversed group of experienced engineers based both in Hoffman Estates, IL and the pilot plant in Decatur, IL.


Basic Minimum Qualifications:

MS in Chemical Engineering or related engineering field and 6 yr. experience; PhD in Chemical Engineering or related engineering field and 3 yr. experience.

Experience is preferred in new product development from concept to commercialization or in technical support of manufacturing operations.  In particular, experience is preferred in downstream purification and refining unit operations, creation of mass and energy balances, new product and process development including scale-up at Pilot scale, commercializing new technology, and statistical analysis and design of experiments.  Capable of working independently to evaluate, select, and apply broad engineering/scientific techniques.


Scope of Responsibility:  

Provides engineering expertise to successfully develop, pilot, and commercialize new processes and products.  Contributes to group compliance of all relevant Safety, OSHA, EPA, and Corporate guidelines.  Leads or acts as a key technical contributor on projects/experiments/research of significant scope and complexity with very high impact on the business.


Functional Expertise (Technical Knowledge):  

Designs lab, pilot, and commercial trials followed by evaluation and documentation of results.  Applies sound engineering principals to innovation of process development and reduction of capital and operating costs.  Develops economic evaluations, implements new technology, and provides post-commercialization troubleshooting.  Participates in startups and launches of new processes at commercial scale with global opportunity.  Develops and provides expertise in unit operation performance and integration to optimize economic return on new products and processes.  Demonstrates ability to deliver results where high levels of ambiguity initially existed.


Functional Expertise (Ideation/Innovation/Problem Solving):  

Works directly with chemists, biologists, engineers, associate scientists, operations personnel, and engineering technicians to develop novel processes at lab, pilot, and commercial scale.  Provides guidance to science teams on critical lab scale development criteria.  Develops solutions to complex problems that required the regular use of innovation and creativity in identifying and trying new and different approaches.


Communicating and Influencing:

Effectively communicates project goals and progress to key stakeholders.  Provides leadership and direction to engineering technicians and lab technicians.  Communicates and interact with others in a way that builds strong working relationships.  Effectively builds rapport across the organization.  Participates in defining resource requirements to achieve assigned responsibilities including Process Technology personnel and Pilot equipment.


Talent Development:

Supervises technical aspects of more junior personnel and may formally manage more junior personnel.  Delivers formal training within and outside of immediate team.
