ROLE PURPOSE:  The purpose of this role is to develop regional procurement strategies and the execution plan for the category in consultation and collaboration with the Global Category Manager.  The Regional Category Manager North America (NOAM), Ingredients will support and develop appropriate strategies to deliver improved material purchase value, reduce risk, improve quality and service as well as develop and deliver a procurement plan which meets or exceeds targets and expectations.  Through excellent leadership and communications skills, the NOAM Regional Category Manager will ensure that cross functional business opportunities are actively embraced. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop category and strategic sourcing strategies and plans to support Global Procurement and the NOAM region business unit.
  • Own and manage all regional category spend for the category /own supplier relationships.
  • Strong commodity based materials knowledge in the categories of eggs, dairy, starch, carrageenan, pectin, guar gum, locust bean gum, emulsifiers, cocoa, gelatin, cellulose, cocoa, xanthan gum, agar-agar & sugar to name a few.
  • The ability to analyze market fundamentals and data trends in order to provide purchase recommendations in highly competitive commodity driven market.
  • Lead raw material exchange program within NOAM  region.
  • Develop and manage supplier KPI metrics.
  • Develop budget pricing forecasts and the strategy to achieve the forecasts.
  • Develop influential and positive NOAM stakeholder relationships across the group to ensure category buy-in.
  • Negotiate category contracts and manage supplier relationship to meet savings and operational requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate and robust commercial arrangements which meet the business requirements are developed.
  • Build subject matter expertise in the category along with good understanding of regional market dynamics.
  • Establish, lead and support cross functional category sourcing teams.
  • Ensure savings targets and reporting requirements are met in a timely manner.
  • Challenge business requirements and specification where appropriate to deliver best value.
  • Collaborate with Business, Manufacturing and Technical management to ensure common understanding of needs and alignment of procurement approach.
  • Drive an innovation & continuous improvement culture within the supply chain where Tate and Lyle is the customer of choice.
  • A role model both within the organisation and the wider Ingredients market, creates a culture of honesty, integrity and trust.

Utilizes a broad network of internal support functions including Technical Services, Product Management / Marketing, Innovation and Commercial Development (ICD), Legal, Quality, Safety, Finance, HR and ISIT.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

The person is a self-starter with a proven track record in Strategic Procurement and Category management in blue chip companies.   With experience in building mutual relationships with key suppliers, this person will effectively establish business needs, matching innovative solutions to meet those needs.  Their experience will have been gained ideally in a fast paced, dynamic industry where the emphasis is on relationships, solution benefit, meeting challenging targets and delivering business needs.

Essential to do the job:

  • Proven expertise in sourcing food ingredients as a category manager in an MRP driven environment is essential to this role.
  • Well-developed commercial mind-set and supplier market knowledge.
  • Experience leading cross functional teams to deliver results.
  • Understanding and ability to successfully develop and manage stakeholder relationships.
  • Proven track record of strategic procurement and category management with small, medium and large organisations and in a variety of cultures, ideally with global exposure within allocated category.
  • Outcomes oriented individual with a proven track record of delivering savings targets by developing excellent stakeholder relations both within the organisation and the supplier market.
  • Track record of working successful in cross functional teams to serve business needs, develop a compelling selling proposition, and negotiate to win-win contract closure.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of $20mm+ over more than 5 of years.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skill.
  • Well-developed presentation skills.
  • A professional procurement qualification through a recognised professional body preferred.
  • A degree in a Business or Technical discipline.

To be successful in the role:

  • Solid understanding of the buying cycle and being able to utilize this knowledge for every client interaction to deliver against client expectation and move towards being a trusted advisor.
  • Technical market understanding of Ingredients categories proven by demonstrable experience, ideally supported by a   Bachelor Degree in an appropriate discipline.
  • Experience in successfully delivering category management in a global organisation.
  • Experience in wider related business activity would be beneficial.
  • Systems experience within an SAP environment would be advantageous.
  • PC literate including MS office suite of standard programs.
  • Experience and understanding of risk management tools and techniques.
  • Performing market assessments, trends and recommending mitigation action plans.
  • Willingness to travel both domestic and international in support of Category and business unit requirements. Positive outlook.
