The Role Details

Upon joining the team, you will immediately become part of a dynamic and changing, cross-functional team, interacting with experts in the area of sweeteners, process engineering, sensory testing, nutrition, product registration, global regulatory compliance, procurement and manufacturing.  Jointly you will work together to develop and introduce new sweetener technology offerings to the food and beverage marketplace.  You will be a synergistic collaborator on all projects you are involved in and in some cases you will be leading the project coordination or formally functioning as project manager.   You will be a key part of our evolving workplace and progress us in our efforts for continuous improvement.  

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining a safety mindset
  • Identifying opportunities, followed by chemistry ideation and hands-on development in close collaboration with application research
  • Assessing  initial technical and economic feasibility
  • Designing approaches for commercial sale up in cooperation with process engineers
  • Developing and maintain knowledge of cutting edge/new technologies and competitor activity
  • Creating and documenting intellectual property in invention disclosures, patent applications and  technical reports
  • Operating as a strong team player, both as a team member and as a team/project leader across multiple projects
  • Mentoring and developing colleagues

     

    Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Organic/Natural Products/Medicinal Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • Strong track record of technical, behavioral and thought leadership
  • Technical expert in two or more of the areas of organic chemistry, enzymatic biotransformation, separation science, natural product isolation
  • Hands on experience in use of enzymes for chemical transformations
  • Ability to develop and champion independent ideas for new product development
  • Record of publications and/or patents
  • Personal alignment with Tate and Lyle’s Core Values (safety, integrity, respect) and Leadership behaviors (Partnership, Agility, execution)

     

    Preferred qualifications

  • 5-15 years industrial experience in the development of novel food ingredients
  • Experience in the development of sweetener ingredients
  • Track record of new product development based on optimizing structure-activity relationships
  • Strong external network and experience in developing industrial and academic partners in relevant technical areas
  • Strong skills in providing technology guidance and colleague development through mentoring  and coaching
