Regional Transportation Procurement Category Lead

Report to the Following

Director of Transportation

This role has two buyers as direct reports


Responsible for orchestrating the source relationships and executing on the purchasing strategy to manage the transportation procurement plan. 


The primary role of a category manager is to support the purchasing and governance activities of goods and services needed by the organization. This role is responsible for the bidding process, contractual negotiation and supplier performance process that will be used within the sourcing and procurement function. This position is a key driver in ensuring transportation spends are managed for cost optimization, governance and risk mitigation, while delivering services on time with a high degree of quality.


  • Category manager scope: Transportation services encompassing rail, van, bulk truck, air, and ocean categories in total $300 MM spend.
  • Span of direct goods and services/Indirect goods and services:
  • Geographic span: North America

Decision Profile

  • The category manager is authorized to execute on purchasing plans per the business processes and policies. Changes may need to be approved by a director/vice president if they fall outside parameters defined by the business process.

Success Measured by

Category manager execution:

  • Ensuring suppliers are selected and managed per specifications of the company in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Follow contractual and business processes.
  • Ongoing conflict resolution of supplier issues, and developing, educating and measuring results for broader use in the supply chain team.
  • Adherence to process (proactive and reactive audits).
  • Overall flow metrics.
  • Talent development and management.
  • Communicate analysis results and recommendations to supply chain leadership on an ongoing and as-needed basis.
  • Execute ongoing improvement of selection, negotiation, monitoring, tracking, measuring and reporting per company policies.

  • B.S. in operations/supply chain management/business or equivalent years of experience — required.
  • Master's degree in operations/supply chain management/business or equivalent years of experience — desired.
  • Data gathering, and quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills, including business process metrics and measures linking to business KPIs — required.
  • Membership in professional organizations, trade or user groups, and a pattern of regular attendance at industry conferences to enhance their knowledge of supply chain sourcing and procurement — desired.


  • Strong communication skills, with a proven ability to understand key role concepts and communicate with business stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, as well as the ability to perform in a command-and-control role under pressure and manage multiple priorities with competing demands.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, conflict resolution, data-processing and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in process formulation and continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency using PC-based applications (such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and/or Access).
  • Understanding of enterprise technology applications that enable sourcing and procurement execution and reporting.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical/statistical data to draw conclusions to optimize costs.


The following experience is essential:

  • Min. 10 years of Transportation procurement experience and knowledge
  • Experience using PC-based applications (including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and/or Access).
  • Experience working within supply chain functions with proven leadership capability.
  • Hands-on information gathering, analysis and management reporting.
  • Hands-on experience with modeling, analysis and simulation tools.
  • Hands-on experience working with multiple partners to resolve exceptions and negotiate best alternatives.
  • Has successfully worked in a team-based environment.
  • Min. 10 years of Transportation market experience and knowledge


The following experience is desirable:

  • Experience in transportation carrier operations
  • Experience working in food ingredient or process industry.


  • Availability to travel (15%), when appropriate.
