The Unit EHS Engineer will primarily drive and support process safety at our largest manufacturing facility in Decatur, Illinois. The role requires active participation and expertise in EHS management initiatives across the site.    All activities are, in line with the global Journey to EHS Excellence and the COMAH/OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP).

Together with the operations, engineering and maintenance teams the Unit EHS Engineer will improve overall safety performance. This individual will work on projects of varying scope that will encompass multiple aspects of EHS safety (Hazard identification, HAZOP, Management of Change, Training, Job Risk Analysis, Dust Hazard, Permit to Work, Emergency Preparedness, Bow Tie Analysis, Scenario Based Auditing, and Incident Investigation).

The Unit EHS Engineer will report to the Site EHS Manager or the Area Manager-  unit production leader.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Coordinate:
    • Compliance efforts in line with COMAH/OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM)and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) rules
    • Efforts around Dust Hazards (Analysis, risk reduction, training)
    • Process safety training needs
    • Management of Change process
    • Risk Management
  • Oversight of Process Safety Critical Asset Integrity/Mechanical Integrity program of the Production Unit
  • Development of Major Accident Response Plans/Emergency Response Plans
  • Develop and update Operating Procedures
  • Participate in EHS incident investigations

Experience/Qualifications:

  • 1-5 years related experience in EHS, Safety or Process Safety in a chemical/food manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor’s Degree  preferred (prefer Chemical or Mechanical Engineering)
  • Certified Safety Professional preferred
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills in with the ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, team building and influencing skills
  • Experience in EHS management systems and auditing
  • Experience in root cause investigation techniques
